With the dead period now in effect, SEC Country is counting down the top 10 recruiting targets for Florida in the Class of 2017.
No. 1 is Aubrey Solomon, a 5-star defensive tackle from Leesburg, Ga.
Recruiting importance of Aubrey Solomon
Defensive tackle is the second-biggest priority for the Gators this year. They once had three commitments at the position and are now down to just one, Kyree Campbell. Florida has a number of options remaining on the board, but Solomon is without question the No. 1 target. He has the ability to play right away for the Gators, who desperately need that type of impact because they’re expected to lose both of their starters — senior Joey Ivie and junior Caleb Brantley, a projected first-round pick — in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Biggest competition for Aubrey Solomon
It really is anybody’s guess. Solomon has named six different leaders in the last year and made a spur-of-the-moment commitment to Michigan, a pledge he has since rescinded. Alabama, Georgia and Michigan are considered the primary players, but his recruitment has been very fluid and ever-changing. Florida appeared to be falling out of the mix for Solomon during the fall, but now he plans to give the Gators his final official visit on Jan. 27.
Signing day projection for Aubrey Solomon
Solomon is also scheduled to visit Auburn and Southern Cal in January, and he’s already taken trips to Alabama and Michigan. The in-state Bulldogs can’t be counted out either, as he plans to unofficially visit UGA as well. Florida is considered a long shot for Solomon at this time, but one visit could change that, given the way his process has played out. The Gators hope to sell him on the opportunity for early playing time and their NFL success. With Brantley, Florida could have a defensive lineman selected in the first round of the draft for the fourth time in five years.
