TAMPA, Fla. — Devan Barrett will soon trim his list of more than 40 scholarships offers.
The four-star athlete from Tampa Catholic plans to visit several schools this summer and name a group of finalists before his senior season.
He knows two schools will make the cut.
“Definitely Auburn and Florida,” Barrett said Sunday. “Those are the two schools I’ve been to the most and their coaches are recruiting me hard. Those are the top two for me right now.”
The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder will visit Auburn next week during his four-college tour.
“I’ve been up there multiple times, so I know what to expect,” Barrett said. “It’s a great school, great campus, great environment. Everybody around there is cool. It’s a family atmosphere and that’s what I’m looking for when it comes down to committing.”
Barrett will also visit Tennessee as well as Florida State and North Carolina. Vols tight end coach Larry Scott is Barrett’s primary recruiter.
“He’s really coming after me,” Barrett said. “He’s a great guy and great coach. I talk to him a lot. He’s always telling me about Tennessee and how nice Knoxville is, so I’m looking forward to it. He’s telling me I can play as a true freshman, and that’s what I want. Just the opportunity to show my talents.”
Barrett said Auburn, FSU, Tennessee and UNC are all recruiting him as a running back, while Florida is giving him the option to pick his position.
“They’re leaving it up to me, running back or cornerback,” Barrett said of the Gators. “I’m going back to Gainesville real soon. The coaches have been all in my ear about it, so I can’t wait to get up there again.”
