GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Alex Leatherwood has a tough month ahead of him.
The 5-star offensive tackle from Pensacola, Fla., is currently committed to Alabama, but plans to make a final decision on Dec. 16. Florida, Michigan and Southern Cal are still under consideration for Leatherwood’s signature, and at this moment he’s not sure which school will land him.
“I’m kind of still iffy about it,” Leatherwood said of his Alabama pledge. “I’m not really like dead set yet, like 100 percent sure yet. But I got a general idea.”
When asked how sure he is, Leatherwood seemed truly undecided.
“About … I don’t know. I don’t know,” he admitted.
Last month Leatherwood revealed his commitment was not as strong as it had been. Now he seems even more open after attending Florida’s 20-7 win over South Carolina. It was his first visit to Florida in seven months.
“It was a great atmosphere. I had a lot of fun,” Leatherwood said. “I enjoyed the game. I enjoyed being here around the coaches and talking to them.”
The 6-foot-6, 327-pound prospect came into the trip wanting to see how the Gators would respond following their 31-10 loss at Arkansas.
“I liked what I saw,” he said.
Leatherwood also had his eyes on Florida’s offensive line. The unit had two starters go down with injuries and played four underclassmen in the starting lineup.
“Yes, it is,” Leatherwood said when asked if that was appealing. “As we all know, their line needs help. It could be better. They’re struggling on the O-line.
“So basically I can come in and make an instant impact. It makes me feel good about the opportunity that I have to come in and play.”
And that’s the message Florida is sending to Leatherwood, who is ranked the nation’s No. 2 offensive tackle and No. 6 overall prospect. Gators coach Jim McElwain is personally recruiting the Under Armour All-American.
“It’s not always about football,” Leatherwood said of their conversations. “That’s not our entire relationship, just talking about me playing (at Florida). We also have a personal relationship. We talk about other stuff than football.”
Leatherwood is scheduled to officially visit Alabama on Nov. 26 for the Iron Bowl against Auburn. He’s also considering a return trip to Florida in December for an official visit.
“Maybe … I like them a lot. They play a big role in my recruitment,” Leatherwood said. “I’ll just have to see how it plays out.”
OT K’Rojhn Calbert deciding Wednesday
After visiting three SEC schools in as many weeks, 3-star offensive K’Rojhn Calbert is ready to make his decision.
The 3-star offensive tackle from McMinnville, Tenn., plans to announce his commitment Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET.
“I’ll think hard on it the night before and just pray to God I chose the right place,” Calbert said.
His five finalists are Florida, Louisville, Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina. The Gators made the cut after he enjoyed his trip Saturday to Florida.
“It was fun and it was great,” Calbert said. “I got to see the facilities and go down on the football field. It’s a pretty nice place.”
The 6-foot-5, 290-pound prospect visited Tennessee on Nov. 5 and South Carolina on Oct. 29. The in-state Vols are the favorite to land him.
“I’m a Tennessee guy,” Calbert admitted. “I’m not saying I show a little bit of favoritism to them, but I feel like that’s the most respectful home first. But both (Florida and Tennessee) have a special place in my heart. Florida giving me an offer during the summer, that meant a lot to me.”
