GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Anthony Hines wasted no time rescheduling his Florida trip.
The nation’s No. 2 inside linebacker from Plano, Texas, will officially visit the Gators this weekend for their homecoming game against Missouri. Hines planned to visit Florida for the LSU game but canceled because of Hurricane Matthew.
The 6-foot-2, 222-pounder has never visited Florida, but is being heavily recruited by the staff. Defensive coordinator Geoff Collins and linebacker Randy Shannon have been pursuing him for more than a year. Shannon has previously landed prospects from the state of Texas.
Florida was also scheduled to host the nation’s No. 1 wide receiver, Donovan-Peoples Jones, on an official visit last weekend. He hasn’t set another date for that trip yet, but intends to make it to Gainesville.
Florida contacts 5-star JUCO QB
Luke Del Rio may not be the only former Alabama quarterback on Florida’s roster next year.
The Gators have expressed interest in former 5-star recruit Blake Barnett, according to a report from 247Sports. Barnett left the Crimson Tide last month and enrolled at Palomar Junior College in his home state of California.
The 6-foot-5, 200-pounder will transfer to a new FBS school in the summer of 2017 as a redshirt sophomore.
Florida offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier offered Barnett a scholarship 10 days after he took the same position at Michigan in January 2014. Nussmeier then visited him later that month.
California, Miami, Michigan State, Oregon, UCLA and Washington have also contacted Barnett, according to the report.
The Gators will have four scholarship quarterbacks on their roster in 2017: redshirt junior Luke Del Rio and freshmen Jake Allen, Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask. Franks and Trask are expected to redshirt this season.
5-star OT a soft commit to Alabama?
Alabama commit Alex Leatherwood was another big-time recruit scheduled to visit the Gators last Saturday, but missing that trip shouldn’t hurt Florida’s chances.
The 5-star offensive tackle from Pensacola, Fla., revealed Tuesday that he isn’t a strong pledge to the Crimson Tide.
“The strength of my commitment is a little less than what it was,” Leatherwood told Scout.com.
Leatherwood plans to visit Georgia this weekend and took trips to Auburn and Michigan in September. He recently told SEC Country that Florida is his No. 2 school behind Alabama.
The 6-foot-6, 327-pounder is ranked the nation’s No. 2 offensive tackle and No. 5 overall prospect.
Florida pledge nominated for Under Armour All-America Game
Wide receiver Daquon Green could be joined by a fellow Tampa product and Gators commit in the Under Armour All-America Game.
Florida pledge Zachary Carter is one of 32 recruits who’ve been selected for an online voting contest to determine the final two roster spots for the game.
Carter is ranked the nation’s No. 6 strongside defensive end and has 27 tackles and 4.5 sacks this season.
Florida fans can vote for Carter at this link.
The Under Armour All-America Game will be held on Jan. 1, 2017 in Orlando, Fla.
