GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Shawn Davis is ready to go public with his college decision.
The 3-star cornerback from Miami told SEC Country last month he was “100 percent sure” of his destination, but wanted to keep it a secret. He’ll reveal his choice Friday in a commitment video on Twitter.
His finalists are Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Miami and Tennessee, but he’s expected to pick between the Gators and hometown Hurricanes. He also holds offers from Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss and South Carolina, among others.
What are the determining factors in his decision?
“Style of play, the relationship with the coaches and the things they’re telling me,” Davis said. “Also the school itself.”
Davis said he liked everything about Florida when he last visited for Friday Night Lights. The school’s “DBU” tradition appeals to him.
“There’s a lot of top DBs that came out of this defense and went to the NFL. I really like that,” Davis said. “They play very aggressive. They hit hard and they know how to cover.”
UF linebackers coach Randy Shannon and secondary coach Torrian Gray both have recruited Davis to the Gators. They plan to sign a large cornerback class for 2017, but that doesn’t bother Davis.
“Not at all,” Davis said. “Coach Gray told me don’t be afraid to come in and compete with some dogs. As a freshman he wants me to work hard and get some playing time.”
Gators commit makes a big jump in Rivals250
It’s been a good week for 4-star cornerback Elijah Blades.
Things got better for him Tuesday with the release of the latest Rivals250. No recruit made a bigger jump in the rankings than Blades, who moved up 111 spots to No. 124.
He is now Florida’s second-highest rated commit on Rivals.com.
UF’s 2017 class better than team rankings indicate
The Gators currently are No. 16 in the team rankings on Rivals, but that may not represent the quality of their class.
Among the 15 schools ranked higher, only Florida State has fewer commitments than Florida’s 14. Half of those 14 are Rivals250 prospects, which is more than eight schools ranked ahead of the Gators, including FSU. No. 3 LSU also has seven commits in the Rivals250.
Recruiting classes are ranked based on points, so the more recruits you have the higher your ranking will be. Florida’s class is No. 13 on Scout and No. 15 on 247Sports.
But based on average star rating per commitment, the Gators check in at No. 8 on Rivals, No. 9 on Scout and No. 10 on 247Sports.
