GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida is back to its winning ways and moving on to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.
After losing four of their last eight games, including the SEC tournament final, the top-seeded Gators went undefeated this weekend in the Gainesville Regional at McKethan Stadium. They will host rival Florida State next weekend in the Super Regional, a best-of-three series for a spot in the College World Series.
UF opened the Gainesville Regional with a 9-2 win Friday over Bethune-Cookman, then beat UConn 6-5 behind an eighth-inning homer by Jonathan India on Saturday.
“Jonathan came up with a big hit at the end,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said after that game. “I’m pleased with how we battled.”
The Gators clinched their regional Sunday by handling Georgia Tech, 10-1. Alex Faedo pitched eight innings, allowing zero runs and four hits with 10 strikeouts.
“Alex Faedo was the story of the game,” O’Sullivan said Sunday. “He made a lot of big pitches early in the game.”
O’Sullivan’s team swept the Seminoles during the regular season by a combined score of 17-4 in their three games played. Florida has won five straight against FSU (a school record) and 10 of the last 12.
