As Jim McElwain tries to rebuild Florida football into a championship program, one of his mottos is “recruit daily or die.” Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest Florida recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.
Gilbert Frierson visits UF
The Gators have two defensive backs from Miami in their 2018 class. A third could join Florida’s commitment list before National Signing Day.
Gilbert Frierson, a 4-star cornerback from Miami, attended Friday Night Lights earlier this month. He committed to his hometown Hurricanes in February 2016, but hasn’t shut the door on other schools.
“I’m just keeping quiet about my recruitment and where I’m at with it,” Frierson said when asked what his commitment status was with Miami.
“I committed very early in my recruiting process. I never gave other schools a chance, so I’m opening it up a little bit.”
One of those schools is Florida, which offered him in October 2016. Frierson told SEC Country he speaks “very often” with UF defensive coordinator Randy Shannon, defensive backs coach Corey Bell and on-campus recruiting coordinator John Herron.
“I talk to Coach Bell, Coach Shannon, Coach (Herron) a lot,” Frierson said. “They want to see me play for the Gators and be part of greatness. The coaches are great. They always show positivity towards me and they’re willing to do anything to help me get where I need to be.”
“It was a great experience seeing those guys,” Frierson said. “I’ve been to Florida before. Friday Night Lights was my third time. Every time I come up I’m just trying to get more comfortable. I’m waiting to see how Florida’s season goes. I feel I can go anywhere, but I can only pick one school at the end of the day.”
News & notes
- Over the weekend, SEC Country learned that 4-star running back Dameon Pierce visited Florida last Thursday. Having also attended Friday Night Lights, that marks two UF trips in one week for Pierce.
- Gators QB commit Matt Corral continues to see his star-rating fluctuate in the 247Sports Composite rankings. Corral temporarily lost his fifth star for a couple days earlier this month. The Elite 11 finalist once again lost his 5-star rating Sunday, but regained it as of Monday morning. Corral has been ranked the nation’s No. 2 pro-style QB and No. 23 overall prospect for several months. He addressed the matter on Twitter.
