Florida football: SEC coaches anonymously critique Gators’ defense

Welcome to another installment of Good Morning, Gators, SEC Country’s daily morning column covering Florida athletics with beat writer Jordan McPherson. Here’s a look at what you might have missed on Monday:

SEC coaches anonymously critique conference opponents

Athlon Sports on Monday published a piece in which SEC coaches talked anonymously about their fellow conference members ahead of the 2017 season.

And these coaches certainly didn’t hold back against the Florida Gators, especially about a Florida defense that has to replace eight starters. Some of the highlights:

“They’ll have to invent some things to rush the passer this year, and I’m not sure if they can because Randy Shannon likes to keep things simple. It’s a lot of pieces to replace, and the biggest thing they won’t be able to do is just rush four every time. When we played them, I think they blitzed us three times, and they could do that because they could just whip you with the front four and they can’t do that anymore.”

“The linebackers don’t scare you at all.”

“The way they change their offense week to week and the number of formations is an issue. It’s hard to replicate during the week because you know you’ll see something you haven’t seen before.”

The lone positive comment given to Florida — albeit a great one — was that wide receiver Antonio Callaway is a “damn good player” and that Florida’s receivers and tight ends are “all really good players.”
