GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida landed the eighth member of its 2018 class Tuesday with the commitment of Curtis Dunlap.
He’s the first pledge for offensive line coach Brad Davis in this recruiting cycle and will be the first player from IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) to sign with the Gators.
Here’s a closer look at the new Florida commit.
4-star offensive lineman Curtis Dunlap
Weight: 368 pounds
High school: IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)
Rankings: No. 6 offensive guard, No. 206 overall prospect (247Sports composite)
Details of his decision: Originally from Jacksonville, Fla., Dunlap has been recruited by Florida for a few years. The arrow began pointing toward the Gators once Davis joined the staff. Dunlap erased any concerns about his weight or level of competition with his performance earlier this month at The Opening Finals, where he was named one of the camp’s top 5 offensive linemen.
How he fits in: The Gators have several offensive tackle targets for the 2018 class. The options were limited at guard, however, and it was important for Florida to land a quality interior lineman. Dunlap’s commitment not only accomplishes that, but it gives Florida a foot in the door at IMG Academy and creates momentum for Friday Night Lights.
Chances of playing early: Unless Dunlap has a senior-year transformation similar to Florida’s Jawaan Taylor, he likely will need a redshirt season to lose weight and develop physically in the strength program. Once Dunlap is ready to play, however, he could be a multi-year starter for the Gators and provide them with some size inside.
