As Jim McElwain tries to rebuild Florida football into a championship program, one of his mottos is “recruit daily or die.” Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest Florida recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.
One last look for Jacob Copeland
Jacob Copeland, the nation’s No. 9 wide receiver, filmed his commitment video Sunday with SEC Country, but that didn’t mark the end of his recruiting visits.
Copeland, a 4-star recruit from Pensacola, Fla., made a surprise visit to Alabama on Monday, causing a stir on social media ahead of his much-anticipated decision.
His top schools are Alabama, Florida and Florida State. The in-state Gators have long been considered the favorite for Copeland, but Alabama can’t be underestimated.
The Crimson Tide got the last crack at Copeland before he commits. Monday was the final day of the summer quiet period, when a coach can only have face-to-face contact with a recruit or their parents on a college campus.
The entire month of August is a dead period, with no face-to-face contact between coaches and recruits. Copeland is scheduled to release his commitment video this week.
The Under Armour All-American has visited Tuscaloosa four times since April, with two trips to Gainesville during that span. Copeland called his car ride with Nick Saban the greatest moment of his life.
Florida’s Jim McElwain, meanwhile, has recruited Copeland harder than any coach. The 6-foot, 192-pound prospect attended the Orange & Blue Debut and Friday Night Lights. He also grew up a Gators fan.
“UF was always a dream school for me,” Copeland said previously. “Just knowing it’s Florida, you can’t go wrong there. You’re going to get a great education.
“The Crimson Tide, man, that’s a legendary school. They have national championships. Nick Saban is a legendary coach.”
Copeland is ranked the nation’s No. 52 overall prospect and No. 9 player from Florida, according to the 247Sports Composite.
