GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida coach Jim McElwain said as part of the program’s future facility upgrades, the school will be adding a new locker room for former Gators.
Even though McElwain is only in his second season at Florida, he said it’s important to him that those former players maintain a strong connection with the program and feel welcomed.
“(We’re) putting in a spot that is a former Gator locker room. A place that they can come back here and work out and know that it’s home, and in turn now they have an opportunity to show the guys that are here working out what it’s like to be in the National Football League,” he said. “I’m one of these guys that wants them back here as much as possible because this was home for them and such a big place for them moving on to the next level.”
McElwain shared those comments during his weekly appearance on “Gator Talk” while responding to question from a fan in attendance at the live radio show inside Piesanos Pints & Pies.
He noted another element of outreach to Florida’s NFL players, as well.
“We just sent off to, I believe it’s our 43 players that are on rosters right now, we sent them their Florida Gator sweats and hats and a little care package to thank them for what they did for this university,” McElwain said. “I think that’s something special, and getting those guys back has been great to see. …
“You know what’s also really cool? When they make a play and chomp.”
