GAINESVILLE, Fla. — During his weekly appearance on “Gator Talk” Thursday night inside Piesanos Pints & Pies, Florida football coach Jim McElwain shared his first impressions of new Gators athletic director Scott Stricklin.
Stricklin was officially introduced on Tuesday and will succeed retiring AD Jeremy Foley on Nov. 1
Stricklin and McElwain visited on Monday.
“I had an opportunity to spend about 5-10 minutes with him. I think the one thing that really struck me, obviously knowing his background and what he’s done, been in the league, understands all that, but more than that was his excitement to be a part of such a great place,” McElwain said. “We’ve got great people here. He’s walking into a place obviously that Jeremy’s done an unbelievable job with over the years.
“Really, the thing that stood out most to me was when we were visiting in the office, he was sitting on the edge of his chair. And, I tell you, just that energy is something that really excites me.”
Stricklin has spent the past six years as the athletic director at Mississippi State, his alma mater, and said Tuesday that he felt Florida was the only, or one of the only jobs he could have seen himself taking.
That resonated with McElwain too.
“That does, and yet, there’s a whole bunch of people in this country that this would be the only place they’d ever leave for,” he said.
