As Jim McElwain tries to rebuild Florida football into a championship program, one of his mottos is “recruit daily or die.” Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest Florida recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.
John Dixon holds big offers early
The Gators made some recruiting inroads in Tampa, Fla., in the previous cycle, and John Dixon will be one of their top targets in the area for the Class of 2019.
Dixon currently has a 3-star rating from 247Sports, but his first wave of offers will likely lead to a fourth star.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound cornerback from Wharton High (Tampa, Fla.) holds nine offers so far, and among those schools are Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Ohio State.
The Gators offered Dixon in June after he camped at UF.
“I was surprised by the offer,” Dixon told SEC Country. “I grew up a Florida fan so that’s hard to pass up. Plus, it came from Coach (Jim) McElwain.
“He told me he liked my work ethic and cover skills and that he wanted me to be a Gator.”
Dixon said he speaks with several Florida coaches, but enjoys talking to McElwain most. He also admits the Gators could benefit from being his childhood favorite.
“A little bit,” Dixon said. “Coach McElwain just told me to keep Florids in mind, no matter how many offers I get.
“He knows how I feel about Florida. I told him my room is competely filled with Gators stuff. Sheets, pillows, all that.”
Dixon will return to UF this fall and said he liked Florida’s weight room and new facilities on his last visit to Gainesville.
He singled out South Carolina and Alabama as the schools recruiting him the hardest right now. Dixon plans to make his decision after his junior season.
“The most important factors to me are coaching and development,” Dixon said. “Once I figure out what’s best for me and who recruits me consistently, I’ll be ready to commit.”
Randy Russell names top 5
One of South Florida’s best defensive backs has reassessed his recruiting options.
Randy Russell, a 3-star safety from Carol City High (Miami), named five finalists Monday and Florida made the cut along with Louisville, Michigan, UCLA and Virginia Tech.
Russell de-committed from Miami last month after visiting Florida and plans to return to UF this week for Friday Nights.
