Florida running back Jordan Scarlett is one of 61 players named to the candidate list for the Doak Walker Award on Thursday. This is the first time Scarlett has been named as a candidate for the award, which is given annually to the nation’s top college running back.
Scarlett, a junior, is Florida’s top running back and should get the bulk of the carries in 2017. He served primarily as Kelvin Taylor’s backup during his freshman year and then began the 2016 season as part of a four-man backfield.
But by the middle of the 2016 season, Scarlett broke out from the pack. He ended the year with a team-best 889 rushing yards on 179 carries (5 yards per rush) and scored a touchdown in six straight games in the middle of the season. He had three 100-yard rushing games last season — all in SEC play.
Scarlett, a 5-foot-10, 213-pound running back, has the ideal combination of brute strength to get yards after initial contact and top-end speed to break away in the open field.
Scarlett is the 12th Gator named to a preseason watch list for a national college football award. A full list of Florida players and coaches named to their respective preseason watch lists is below.
