Lamar Jackson is currently the runaway Heisman Trophy favorite. He’s led the Louisville Cardinals to a 6-1 start and a top-10 ranking.
But Jackson could’ve been playing for Florida. And on his Signing Day in 2015, Jackson had fans thinking he was going to pick the Gators.
Jackson appeared on the Dan Patrick Show on Monday morning. One of the questions Patrick asked the sophomore quarterback, was where would Jackson have gone had he not picked Louisville?
The Louisville quarterback said he was always going to go to Louisville, in part because it was away from his Pompano Beach, Fla., home.
But Patrick then brought up the little known fact that Jackson showed up to his signing day announcement with a Florida backpack on.
When Patrick asked Jackson why he did it, Jackson claimed it was meaningless.
“Yeah haha, I did, but it didn’t mean anything,” Jackson said.
Patrick then pointed out that the stunt was mean to Florida. Jackson responded by saying he was just trying to have some fun with his announcement.
“I didn’t really take it like that, I was just having fun with it. You can only do it one time,” Jackson told Patrick.
Florida has a 5-1 record and currently leads the SEC East despite having an early season injury to starter Luke Del Rio. Most Florida fans would be happy with the way the season has gone, but imagine how good the Gators could be if they had Jackson.
The Gators take on the Georgia Bulldogs this week. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
