Announcers live for these moments, where they can attach their voice to some of the plays that live on forever in sports history. And two of the best calls in this calendar year involved SEC teams on the gridiron.
One fan base will remember its moment fondly. The other has been trying to forget it for several months now, but it’ll have a chance to rectify that very soon.
On Saturday morning, Joe Lucia of Awful Announcing released the outlet’s 10 best calls of 2017, and Florida’s game-winning Hail Mary against Tennessee on Sept. 16 was one of them.
Lucia writes that he was torn between the call of CBS’ Brad Nessler and that of Mick Hubert, the voice of the Gators on the radio. Personally, I don’t think anything could’ve beaten Hubert’s call, but that’s just me. I posted that one right below Nessler’s.

Looking back, one thing stood out to me. Florida QB Feleipe Franks’ pass dropped right in the hands of Tyrie Cleveland at the exact moment the clock hit zeroes.

The other call was Clemson’s last-second victory over Alabama in the national championship game, with ESPN’s Chris Fowler mostly taking the back seat to the frenzied crowd before saying, “Hunter Renfrow, little man makes another enormous play.”
Here’s a look back at that play. Sorry, Alabama fans. But like I said, the No. 4 Crimson Tide get another shot at the No. 1 Tigers on New Year’s Day (8:45 p.m. ET, ESPN) when they meet in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
