As Jim McElwain tries to rebuild Florida football into a championship program, one of his mottos is “recruit daily or die.” Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest UF recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.
Milton gets big news
There’s a new quarterback target for the Gators.
Joe Milton, a 4-star prospect from Orlando, Fla., visited UF on Tuesday and received an offer from McElwain at the end of his trip.
“I went to walk out of his office,” Milton said, “and he told me, ‘One more thing, you have a scholarship to the University of Florida.’
“My heart dropped. I felt a little lightheaded, but I got over it. I’m still surprised by the offer.”
The 6-foot-5, 222-pound pro-style passer has blown up as a recruit since his showing at The Opening Regional in Orlando on Feb. 19. Milton has landed 11 offers in the last three weeks, including Georgia, Louisville and Michigan.
Florida was his dream school growing up, but he wasn’t ready to commit to the Gators or name them his leader Tuesday.
“I know the Internet has been freaking out about me going to Florida, but I’m not deciding yet,” Milton said. “I need to wait and evaluate my options. All my offers mean a lot to me and I’m neutral right now. But I know my decision is going to come soon.”
More visitors expected
Milton is the first of many recruits who will visit Florida in the coming weeks. The Gators resumed practice Tuesday and had several prospects on hand to watch.
“This being spring break for a lot of schools, getting a lot of visitors here, recruits for 18, 19, and 20 coming through,” McElwain said Tuesday. “That’s been really good. Our guys are doing a great job of staying in contact and getting guys up here. Fun to see them.
“It’s interesting, every time one of these guys come, especially visitors that have been here multiple times, they see something new. That’s a credit to what we’re doing as a program and a university as far as pushing forward with the facilities and a lot of the things.”
In addition to Milton, UF also hosted 4-star running back Lavonte Valentine (Melbourne, Fla.), offensive tackle Owen Condon (Oklahoma City) and 2020 wide receiver Leonard Manuel (Ocala, Fla.).
Valentine received an offer from the Gators on March 3 and recently ran the 100 meters in 10.44 seconds.
