GAINESVILLE, Fla — New Florida coach Dan Mullen made some staff changes Tuesday.
Mullen has decided not to retain interim coach Randy Shannon, offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and assistant coaches Robb Akey (defensive line), Corey Bell (secondary), Kerry Dixon II (receivers) and Greg Nord (tight ends), sources close to the program told SEC Country.
Brad Davis, Chris Rumph, Ja’Juan Seider and Tim Skipper are still on staff and will be on the road recruiting this week. Their future roles are still to be determined and there’s no timetable for any official announcements.
SEC Country has confirmed that Billy Gonzales and John Hevesy are now on Florida’s staff, following Mullen over from Mississippi State. Shannon’s exit opens the door for another potential MSU assistant coach to join the Gators.
Mullen hired Todd Grantham as his defensive coordinator in January 2017 and he turned the Bulldogs into a top-10 defense in his first season with the program. Grantham is considered the lead candidate to replace Shannon, according to program sources.
The departures of the other assistants do not come as a surprise, especially the decision to part ways with Nussmeier. Florida’s offense has been ranked in the 100’s nationally in each of his three years as coordinator, and Mullen called his own plays at Mississippi State.
