The bizarre Ryan Lochte case took another turn on Wednesday afternoon. According to the police in Brazil, there may not have been a robbery at all.
After a Brazilian judge ordered that Lochte and swimmer Jimmy Feigen have their passports seized, The Daily Mail is reporting that surveillance footage shows that Feigen and swimmer Gunnar Bentz went through the X-ray scanners with their wallets in their possession.
The Feigen and Lochte are now being investigated about falsely reporting a crime. The punishment carries a maximum three year prison sentence in Brazil.
Lochte has left the country and is back home in Florida. Feigen’s whereabout are unknown. Per the Daily Mail he was in Brazil on Tuesday. The two were the only two of the four swimmers to give a statement to the police, which is where police first noticed the discrepancies. On Wednesday, a judge ordered the seizure of Lochte’s and Feigen’s passports.
The surveillance video shows that the four swimmers arrived at 7 a.m., nearly three hours after the reported robbery happened. Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger were the other two swimmers with Lochte and Fiegen. The four had spent the evening partying at the French Hospitality house.
The alleged robbery occurred early Sunday morning. Per Lochte, the four swimmers were in a cab returning from a party as the swimming portion of the Olympics was over. Lochte said that robbers were dressed as police officers and that they were carrying guns. Per Lochte, one put a gun to his forehead. Feigen said that only one of the men had guns.
The U.S. Olympic Committee confirmed that the robbery took place on Sunday. The International Olympic Committee originally denied that the robbery took place, but those statements were recanted as the IOC claimed to not have enough evidence.
This is what Lochte had to tweet on Tuesday, amid the controversy.
My hair is going back to its normal color tomorrow ?
