The biggest story to emerge from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was arguably not one that had anything to do with the actual athletic competitions that took place. Instead, the thing that had everyone talking was an incident involving American swimmer — and former Florida Gator — Ryan Lochte, who falsely claimed that he and three others were robbed at gunpoint.
Once it was revealed that Lochte had lied about what happened, the six-time gold medalist became an international embarrassment and was forced to apologize repeatedly while being dropped by sponsors. And that was without accounting for potential legal ramifications from the incident, which were unclear at the time.
Fortunately for Lochte, USA Today reported on Friday that he has been cleared of all criminal charges stemming from the incident. Lochte was never particularly thought of as a role model before this happened, but his reputation has taken several more hits since the news first broke. At least, however, he won’t have to face any jail time for his indiscretion.
