GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida had a chance Saturday to further make its case that it belongs in the SEC’s top tier for this season.
Instead, the Gators were exposed in a 31-10 loss at Arkansas, getting shutdown on offense and eventually wearing down on defense.
Instead, they gave credence to those who thought they hadn’t been tested by great competition and had an inflated national ranking.
Florida’s stock certainly took a hit in the aftermath of that loss, as reflected in the latest SEC Country Power Poll.
The Gators (6-2, 4-2 SEC) dropped two spots to No. 6 in the latest voting, settling right into the middle tier of the conference. The poll this week consisted of 26 voters, including ones from SEC Country and around the nation.
Florida also dropped 12 spots in the AP Top 25 poll that came out Sunday, tumbling all the way to No. 22.
That’s what happens when a team is outgained 466 yards to 241, allows its opponent to control a nearly 19-minute edge in time of possession and goes 1 of 11 on third down.
Florida, which was coming off three straight wins over Vanderbilt, Missouri and Georgia, still leads the maligned SEC East and controls its path to the conference championship game with remaining hurdles at home against South Carolina this week and then at LSU the following Saturday.
Suddenly, though, the Gators have much to prove.
Check back next week to see the Week 11 installment of the SEC Country Power Poll.
