GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida coach Jim McElwain likened his Gators’ win Saturday at Vanderbilt to bringing an ugly baby home from the hospital.
In other words, a win is a win and he’ll take it however it comes.
Florida’s 13-6 win over the Commodores in Nashville was certainly devoid of any style points, and so the Gators drop a spot to No. 6 this week in the SEC Country Power Poll.
The poll consists of 21 voters, including ones from SEC Country and around the nation.
Florida (4-1, 2-1 SEC) was passed by Arkansas in the poll this week after a second-straight less-than-impressive showing. The Gators received votes ranging from fifth to ninth.
They won despite totaling a season-low 236 yards of offense — 214 yards below their season average entering the game — and a fumble on a designed quarterback sneak at the goal line late in the fourth quarter would end up allowing Vanderbilt two more chances to tie it.
The Commodores wouldn’t close the gap, ultimately ending any hopes of a comeback when backup quarterback Wade Freebeck was intercepted by safety Nick Washington in the final minute.
While the Gators dropped in the SEC Country Power Poll, they climbed five spots in the AP Top 25 to No. 18 and moved up three spots to No. 18 in the Amway Coaches Poll.
But Florida left Nashville with plenty of questions to sort out this week leading up to a home game with LSU (3-2, 2-1), which checks in at No. 7 in the Power Poll this week.
Check back next week to see the Week 6 installment of the SEC Country Power Poll.
