GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida State is aiming to flip one of Florida’s top commitments for 2016, but one of his teammates likes the Gators’ chances of keeping their prized pledge.
Tre’ McKitty, a 2017 tight end from Bradenton (Fla) IMG Academy, visited UF on Saturday for its Junior Day event. He spent last season playing with four-star defensive tackle Shavar Manuel, who committed to Florida on Jan. 5 but took a trip to FSU this weekend.
McKitty expects Manuel to sign with the Gators on Wednesday.
“I’m pretty sure he’ll stick,” McKitty said.
McKitty said he and Manuel have a strong relationship and live next to each other in the IMG Academy dorms.
Manuel has been recruiting McKitty to join him in Gainesville next year.
“He’s already tried to talk to me a little bit,” McKitty said. “Me and him go back and forth all the time talking about schools, but he’s been talking up Florida to me. He says, ‘Hop on board with me bro.’”
Manuel has taken trips to UF and FSU this month, and coaches from both schools have visited him over the past few weeks.
Gators coach Jim McElwain met with Manuel on Thursday, and FSU’s Jimbo Fisher saw him on Jan. 21.
SEC Country plans to speak with Manuel this week to see where he stands in his recruitment. The 6-foot-4, 287-pounder is ranked the No. 9 defensive tackle and 67th overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite.
