Steve Spurrier’s got some tales to tell.
You’ll be able to read them in his upcoming memoir, “Head Ball Coach: My Life in Football, Doing It Differently — and Winning,” released Tuesday by Penguin Books USA.
The Head Ball Coach will appear at the University of Florida bookstore Saturday at 2 p.m. for a book signing — just hours prior to Florida unveiling Steve Spurrier-Florida Field when the Gators open their season against UMass that night at 7:30.
Spurrier co-authored the book with Buddy Martin, a journalist he met as a freshman quarterback at Florida in 1963. Martin had approached Spurrier about a memoir as early as 1990 but was turned down. This time, it was Spurrier who came calling.
“I felt really privileged when he asked me to do it,” Martin told FloridaGators.com. “I always wanted to do this book and I’m glad I didn’t do it before. This is the perfect time to do it. Who knew what was ahead? When we signed up to do the book, I had no idea he was leaving South Carolina.”
Spurrier’s decision to leave South Carolina in the middle of last season is “discussed in-depth” in the book, along with his eccentric 12-year run as the Gators’ head ball coach.
