Saturday was a special night for former Florida coach Steve Spurrier.
The field at the Gators’ home was renamed Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. He served as Mr. Two Bits before the Gators kicked off against UMass. He struck an impressive Usain Bolt pose and played to the crowd.
Turns out, the behind-the-scenes details are fantastic as well.
ESPN’s Chris Low spent quality time with the Head Ball Coach last night. Low wrote an in-depth piece from the experience, and the full story is worth your time.
But there’s a fascinating nugget near the bottom that features a dig at LSU. Read it and weep, Tigers fans.
Spurrier spent the remainder of the night with his family in the suite, as they watched the Gators pull away in the second half to win. He’s still rocking the old flip phone and was continually checking messages and also checking on other scores from around the SEC.
“Why can LSU not get it right on offense? Every year, they have as much talent as anybody in the SEC, and that’s including Alabama,” Spurrier said.
So many things about this are great. The LSU take is amazing and oh-so-typical Spurrier.
But what about him sporting the old flip phone? Can’t the toast of Gainesville splurge for something more modern? (It’s called an iPhone.)
Never change, Head Ball Coach.
