GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The preseason recognition continues to pour in for the Florida football team as three more Gators were added to award watch lists by the Football Writers Association of America on Thursday.
Senior cornerback Duke Dawson and redshirt sophomore defensive end Jabari Zuniga are two of the 103 players on the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which honors the national defensive player of the year.
Meanwhile, junior left tackle Martez Ivey is one of 81 players on the watch list for the Outland Trophy, which honors the nation’s best offensive or defensive lineman.
Dawson and Ivey attended SEC Media Days on Tuesday as two of Florida’s three player representatives.
Both are keystones to the Gators’ hopes in 2017. Dawson moves from nickel to cornerback to fill one of the voids left by second-round NFL Draft picks Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson. And Ivey moves from left guard to tackle to replace veteran David Sharpe while the rest of the offensive line remains intact. Coach Jim McElwain has said he hopes the unit is a strength for Florida this year after being inconsistent in recent seasons.
And Zuniga is a breakout candidate after leading Florida with 5 sacks last season despite contributing most of those stats early in the schedule.
