GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Three of the four Florida players injured last Saturday won’t play at LSU.
UF coach Jim McElwain said safety Marcus Maye (broken arm) will miss the rest of the season after the 20-7 win over South Carolina. On Monday, McElwain added that defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. (right ankle) and left tackle David Sharpe (right ankle) will be out against the Tigers.
When asked, McElwain said he’s never lost this many starters (nine) in a two-game stretch.
“No,” he said shaking his head. “But at the same time, you know what, we got a bunch of guys jumping in there and playing their tails off.”
Center/guard Tyler Jordan also injured his right ankle last Saturday, and McElwain said “we’ll see where that is.” McElwain is hoping to get back defensive end CeCe Jefferson, who missed the South Carolina game with a foot injury.
“He should get some limited reps, and I know how much it means to him so I don’t know,” McElwain said of Jefferson. “I’m not a doctor, but I do anticipate him trying everything he can do to play. Which would be good for us up front obviously in this type of game.”
“There are some guys that possibly could (play). And yet, it’s a decision that they’ve got to make with our doctors and our trainers to see if they want to go make a run at it.”
Jabari Zuniga replaced Cox following his injury, while Martez Ivey slid over for Ivey and Kavaris Harkless filled in at left guard. If Jordan can’t return, T.J. McCoy would be the center. Marcell Harris will be the starting safety with Maye out.
Linebackers Alex Anzalone (broken arm) Jarrad Davis (ankle), quarterback Luke Del Rio (shoulder) and center Cam Dillard (knee) are the other starters out.
“It’s going to be hard,” McElwain said of Davis returning. “It’s bad. He is a tough guy, now. The fact he was doing what he was doing, that just shows you.”
