As Jim McElwain tries to rebuild Florida football into a championship program, one of his mottos is “recruit daily or die.” Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest UF recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.
Latest on Warren Thompson
One of Florida’s top reciever targets in the Class of 2018 is Warren Thompson.
The 4-star recruit from Seffner, Fla., released a top 4 in January and Florida made the cut along with Florida State, Miami and North Carolina.
Thompson has heavy interest in the Gators and the feeling is mutual.
“They’re very high on me,” Thompson told SEC Country. “They’ve made that clear.”
The 6-foot-3, 194-pound wideout has a close relationship with UF receivers coach Kerry Dixon II. He also speaks reguarly with head coach Jim McElwain and defensive line coach Chris Rumph, his area recruiter.
“I love Coach Dixon,” Thompson said. “Me and him joke around all the time. He’s like a father figure to me. We don’t always talk about football. Sometimes he just wants to see how my day is.
“I also talk to Coach Rumph and Coach Mac hits me up. I talk to them a lot. They’re like family to me.”
Thompson has made multiple trips to Florida and most recently visited this spring. However, the fall is his favorite time to be in Gainesville.
“I get up there frequently,” Thompson said. “I went to a game and it was kind of live. I wanted to go LSU (last season) before it got moved. I went to Kentucky, but that wasn’t much of a game. They beat them like a high school team.”
The Gators have signed several players from Thompson’s high school (Armwood) over the years. Thompson has known former UF running back Matt Jones since he was in middle school.
“I call Matt my big brother,” Thompson said. “I used to be out there serving him water on the practice field. He’s somebody I look up to, but we don’t really talk about football or recruiting.”
In addition to his top 4 schools, Thompson is considering trips to Alabama, Oregon and Tennessee. He plans to make his decision after taking official visits.
“Florida doesn’t really have anything left to show me. I’m good with them,” Thompson said. “They just need to keep recruiting me the way they’ve been.”
C.J. Smith interview
The Gators landed a commitment on March 28 from 4-star safety C.J. Smith, who is currently the highest-rated recruit in Florida’s 2018 class.
His longstanding relationships with new assistants Corey Bell and Ja’Juan Seider factored into his decision, as well as the need UF has at his position.
SEC Country caught up with Smith in West Palm Beach following a spring practice. In the video interview below, the 6-foot-2, 193-pound prospect discusses his pledge to the Gators, his bond with the aforementioned coaches and his plans for the future.
