ORLANDO, Fla. — There will be no ball drop for Florida coach Jim McElwain on New Year’s Eve.
He expects to be lights out come midnight.
“I’m not sure I’ll probably see the new year come in,” McElwain said. “I might be tucked into bed getting ready for tomorrow.”
His No. 19 Gators face 14th-ranked Michigan on Friday in the 70th annual Citrus Bowl. McElwain and Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media Thursday to discuss the matchup.
McElwain said the bowl experience has been valuable for his team, which spent time with local kids from the Boys & Girls Club on Wednesday. He’s also been happy with the energy and focus his players have shown.
“I’m proud of the way our guys have carried themselves here in Orlando,” McElwain said. “To see our whole team there investing in those young kids yesterday that may be less fortunate than us, that was something that was awesome.
“Our guys are getting it. It’s more than just about the game of football. We’ve eliminated the dead fish. I think we’re good.”
