Steve Spurrier’s will to win apparently extends beyond the football field to the golf course.
In a new episode of Head Ball Coach Stories, an ongoing series by former Florida Gator James Bates, long-time Florida beat writer and columnist Pat Dooley tells the story of how Spurrier once duped him out of $20.
Dooley and Spurrier were golfing together when Spurrier was still at Florida, and they had put $20 on the 18th hole. Spurrier convinced Dooley that if he bent his second shot on the par 5 around the trees just right, he would end up on the green and have a chance for an eagle.
Dooley unwisely listened. He ended up in the water and settled for a bogey. Spurrier birdied the hole and quickly collected from the gullible sportswriter.
