Vernon Hargreaves III had his homecoming Friday.
The Buccaneers held a press conference to introduce the former Florida cornerback and Tampa, Fla., native.
“It’s surreal,” Hargreaves said of returning to the 813. “I still don’t know if it has hit me yet, but it’s great. It’s an honor to be here.”
Tampa Bay selected Hargreaves with the No. 11 overall in the draft. The majority of analysts projected him to go to his hometown Bucs, which is the team he wanted to play for.
“Of course,” Hargreaves said. “It’s right in my backyard. I’m right next to my mom, don’t have to go too far. This was the spot for me.”
Hargreaves, who describes himself as a press-man cornerback, made an immediate impact for the Gators and hopes to do the same as a rookie. He’s ready to test himself against NFL wide receivers.
“It’s going to be exciting,” Hargreaves said. “I’m ready to showcase my skills. You really see how good you are on Sundays. It’s a whole different ball game. You have to be elite.”
