Georgia-Alabama SEC championship gets ESPN’s best commentators

This Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs (11-1) will take on the No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2) in the SEC Championship Game from Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The game will serve as a rematch of September’s matchup in Athens, where the Tide held on to beat the Dawgs, 24-21, and handed UGA its only loss of the season. ESPN has set the commentators for the game.

For the second year in a row, the SEC Championship Game will air on ABC under ESPN’s umbrella. The game had been on CBS for more than two decades before the conference’s new media-rights agreement shifted it to ABC and ESPN in 2024, when ESPN became the primary rights holder for SEC football.

In addition to the SECCG, there’s a big one going down in Indianapolis between No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Indiana. That game will be on Fox at 8 p.m. ET. The noon game will be No. 11 BYU vs. No. 4 Texas Tech from Arlington, Texas. ABC will carry that game.

But nothing beats a Georgia-Alabama game. Even though 10 of the last 11 have gone Bama’s way, we can all admit they’ve been absolute thrillers. Six have been decided by one touchdown or less. One was Georgia’s epic natty win. And the rest I’d rather not talk about.

But that’s why ESPN College GameDay chose Atlanta as its location on Saturday. And to make things easier, Kirk Herbstreit, the face of the program, gets to stay put and call the game four hours after the show wraps up.

Commentators for the Georgia-Alabama game

ESPN’s flagship duo of Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will serve as the game’s commentators, with Laura Rutledge and Holly Rowe handling sideline coverage. The full group represents the network’s top broadcast team. That’s the same crew that called last year’s game.

Here’s each member’s duties:

  • Chris Fowler (play-by-play)
  • Kirk Herbstreit (color)
  • Holly Rowe (sideline)
  • Laura Rutledge (sideline)

ESPN’s Field Pass — the alternate, on-field broadcast that follows the action from the sidelines — will feature Will Compton, Taylor Lewan, Josh Pate, and Harry Douglas for the Georgia–Alabama SEC Championship Game.

The Big 12 championship, the other ABC game that day, will be called by Joe Tessitore, Jesse Palmer, Katie George and Kris Budden.

This will be Georgia’s fifth consecutive appearance in the SECCG. Herbstreit has been present in Atlanta for the past two. Even though CBS broadcast the 2023 game, Herbstreit was there for College GameDay and was able to introduce his late golden retriever Ben to Uga before kickoff.

Last year, Herbstreit was there again, both for College GameDay and to work the game. That time, he brought Peter, who has joined him on the road since Ben’s death.
