UGA fans erupt for wrong reason over Georgia’s All-Century team

Well, Georgia fans, you’re definitely passionate. Back in June, Jordan D. Hill of Dawgs247 released his Georgia Football All-Quarter Century Team, split into two parts – one post for the offense and one for the defense.

The team included players who suited up for Georgia at any point from 2000 through 2024. Only their stats from those years were considered. So if a player’s career ran from 1998–2002, anything before 2000 didn’t count.

Hill took on a tough challenge, and he deserves credit for that. I think he mostly got it right. I’d probably swap a few guys here and there, but there isn’t one pick I’d really fight over.

And before anyone gets worked up about it, there were two more rules: no current players were eligible for Hill’s team, and NFL careers meant absolutely nothing.

And because my comment section on Instagram really struggled with this one, I’d like to take a minute to remind folks that Champ Bailey did not play college football for Georgia in this century. He’s a legend, yeah, but he played in Athens from 1996-98. That’s not in this century. You’ll see why I had to make that announcement a little later. It’ll be worth it.

Hill’s Georgia All-Quarter Century Offense:

Hill made the right choice in basically every situation. Like it or not, Stetson Bennett has to be No. 1. And you won’t find a bigger Aaron Murray supporter than me. We named our bulldog after him. But, Stetson went back-to-back.

Here’s his All-Century

QB — Stetson Bennett (2017, 2019–22)
8,429 passing yards • 66 TD • 21 INT • 530 rush yards • 14 rush TD

RB — Todd Gurley (2012–14)
3,285 rushing yards • 36 rushing TD • 6.4 YPC

RB — Nick Chubb (2014–17)
4,769 rushing yards • 44 rushing TD • 6.3 YPC

WR — A.J. Green (2008–10)
166 receptions • 2,619 yards • 23 TD

WR — Terrence Edwards (1999–2002)
151 receptions • 2,321 yards • 21 TD

TE — Brock Bowers (2021–23)
175 receptions • 2,538 yards • 26 TD

TE — Orson Charles (2009–11)
94 receptions • 1,370 yards • 10 TD

OT — Andrew Thomas (2017–19)
41 games, starts

OT — Jon Stinchcomb (1998–2002)
46 starts

OG — Max Jean-Gilles (2002–05)
40 starts

OG — Tate Ratledge (2020–24)
37 starts

C — Sedrick Van Pran-Granger (2020–23)
44 starts

I have one position where I think maybe I could put up a good fight, and that’s at center. Sedrick Van Pran was awesome. 100%. He started all 15 games during Georgia’s 2021 and 2022 title runs. But give me David Andrews (2011-14), who played in 50 games during his legendary Georgia career.

And ok, hear me out: George Pickens over Terrence Edwards, anybody? I know Edwards holds UGA records for most career pass receptions (204), most career yards (3,093), most career touchdowns (30), and most yards in a single season (1,004). But…well, maybe not. I think I talked myself out of it. But Pickens was awesome. So was Tavarres King. But Edwards can stay.

There’s also the tight end debate. No, not involving Brock Bowers. But Orson Charles and Leonard Pope. I loved both of these guys. Charles had 374 yards in 2009, 422 in 2010 and 574 in 2011. Pope had 21 yards in 2003, 482 in 2004 and 541 in 2005. As dominant as Pope was, Charles had that extra year. But they both finished with 10 touchdowns.

Georgia fans in the comments of my Instagram/Facebook post had a lot to say about the offense:

“You might want to include Herschel Walker….” one said, which somehow got likes from 48 other people who don’t know what “All-Century” means.

“Only mistake on here is at Center. SVP is a great player but David Andrews was different,” wrote one fan.

“Leonard Pope TE2,” said another.

“Give me (Mohamed) Masquoi over (Terrence) Edwards AT WR….Edwards if u know was known for the drops yall gave Arian Smith hell about,” said another.

Not a bad thought. Massaquoi was the real deal. His final season in Athens, he had 920 yards and 8 touchdowns.

“(Matt) Stafford should be the QB man idc. Stetson was legendary but Stafford is a generational talent 🤷🏾‍♂️” one said.

“The amount of people that don’t know when THIS century started lol,” someone said on Facebook.

“I would put Knowshon Moreno over Gurley and McConkey over Edwards,” another said.

Ok, let’s talk defense.

Hill’s Georgia All-Quarter Century Defense:

Defensively, I had a few more disagreements than I did offensively. But again, it’s hard to argue against anyone Hill chose. Maybe I’d like to find a spot for Alec Ogletree, Lewis Cine, Rennie Curran, Leonard Floyd, Javon Bullard, Brandon Boykin, Odell Thurman, Kelee Ringo, Paul Oliver, Tim Jennings, Geno Atkins or Justin Houston….but you can’t pick ’em all.

Here’s Hill’s All-Quarter Century defense:

DL — David Pollack (2001–04)
283 tackles • 58.5 TFL • 36 sacks • 7 FF

Here are some of my favorite comments from my Facebook/Instagram post.

Georgia fans are outraged that the All-Century team did not include Champ Bailey, who did not play for Georgia in this century:

“And where is Champ Bailey?!?!” an IG user commented.

“Champ Bailey must have played somewhere else 🤔” another said.

“Champ Bailey, cmon man also better choices than Jarvis available,” added another.

“WTF is Champ?” said someone on FB.

“How is Champ Bailey not on the list?” said one more.

Ok, that’s enough picking on my own fan base. Even though there’s about 100 more.

Here’s the other ones:

“Leaving out Cine, Nolan Smith and Tykee, and Kylee seems wrong.”

“Where is the number one NFL draft pick ? Travon Walker ????”

“Call me crazy but Chris Smith over Starks…. Smith 2x Natty champ and key picks against Clemson and Bama”

Here’s one more Champ one because why not: “Brilliant list, no Champ. Lets just stop with the lists.”
