Finding a replacement for Marshall Morgan, the Bulldogs’ kicker for the last four years, has proven to be a tough task for first-year head coach Kirby Smart.
Not to worry, this Georgia fan is here to help. One fan desperate for an improvement on special teams started a GoFundMe to create a new scholarship for one. Although Georgia has already used two kickers and has three on its roster, none is on scholarship.
“Seems like Kirby doesn’t wanna provide a scholarship for a kicker and would rather use it elsewhere,” the fan, Chad Carter per the GoFundMe page, wrote. “As painful that it is to watch any contributions would help to find another consistent kicker like we’ve had in the past!”
Redshirt sophomore William Ham missed more kicks than he made through the season’s first three games (3-for-7), so Smart turned to redshirt freshman Rodrigo Blankship, who had handled kickoff duties all season, for the Bulldogs’ 45-14 loss at Ole Miss. Blankenship got one opportunity — a 36-yard attempt — and missed it.
Marshall nailed 64 of 84 career kicks as a Bulldog, a 76 percent success rate. The two Bulldogs kickers are a combined 3-for-8 this season.
“With 3 games played we continue to have issues getting it through the uprights,” Carter continued. “As a UGA fan I have found it very hard to watch the team struggle with special teams this year.”
Carter is apparently in the minority, though, at least of those who care enough to create a page or contribute. Since being launched Saturday, there has been one donation, $10 from Jackson Jones. Only $24,990 to go!
