For defensive tackles at the NFL combine, no drill is more important than the bench press. That’s certainly good news for UGA’s Chris Mayes.
The 6-foot-3, 338-pounder did 33 bench press reps on Sunday, the most of any D-lineman and the second-most among all 2016 combine participants. Offensive lineman Christian Westerman tallied 34 reps on Thursday.
The combine record, set in 1999 by Eastern Kentucky’s Justin Ernest, is 51 reps.
It’ll be interesting to see how Mayes’ performance affects his draft stock and future in the NFL. CBS Sports projects him to go undrafted in April.
