After one of Georgia’s greatest heartbreaks ever – the Bulldogs led for most of the game, pushed Tennessee to the brink, but lost on a 43-yard Hail Mary pass as time expired Saturday – the Dogs again dropped in the SEC Country Power Poll.
Georgia fell to No. 9 a week after falling two spots to No. 8 after a 45-14 humiliation on the road against Ole Miss.
The poll consists of 21 voters, including ones from SEC Country and around the nation.
Also, Georgia fell out of the AP and coaches polls this week. They ranked No. 25 in the AP and No. 20 in the coaches last week.
On Saturday in Athens, Georgia took a 17-0 lead in the first half and held the lead until Tennessee scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone with 2:56 to play in the fourth quarter. Georgia regained the lead on a 47-yard pass from Jacob Eason to Riley Ridley with 10 seconds to play before Tennessee’s winning pass.
One of the key plays in the game was 15-yard penalty against Georgia for excessive celebration on what seemed to be Georgia’s game-winning pass play. Georgia kicked off from its 20, and Tennessee’s return into Georgia territory set up the winning pass – and left Georgia coach Kirby Smart calling out his players for a lack of discipline.
With their victory, Tennessee remained No. 3 in the SEC Country poll.
The Bulldogs must shake off the shock from Saturday’s loss and prepare for a road game against South Carolina. The Gamecocks rank No. 13 in this week’s poll.
