Despite an upset loss to Vanderbilt Saturday in Athens, the Georgia Bulldogs didn’t lose any ground in the SEC Country Power Poll.
The Bulldogs sat steady at No. 9 following the 17-16 loss to the Commodores. It’s the third straight week they’ve been ranked in that position.
The poll consists of 20 voters, including ones from SEC Country and around the nation.
Georgia was unranked in the AP and coaches polls. It’s the first week this season the Bulldogs received no votes in the AP poll.
Georgia struggled from the first to last whistle in the upset to Vanderbilt. Commodores return man Darrius Sims took the opening kick 95 yards. A slew of penalties led the Dores to Georgia’s goal line, where Ralph Webb pushed it in for 6. Meanwhile, Georgia’s run game was ineffective all afternoon. The backfield that rushed for more than 300 yards the prior week vs. South Carolina managed only 75 yards Saturday.
The Bulldogs did have a chance to win on their final drive with less than two minutes to play. Jacob Eason first converted a fourth-and-13 pass for 23 yards, bringing Georgia to the 50, then got to the 41 three plays later. The game hinged on that fourth-and-1 play. Isaiah McKenzie lined up at tailback and took a handoff to the right, and Zach Cunningham tackled him short of the first down to secure the Vanderbilt win.
The win gave Vanderbilt a jump in the poll. The Commodores moved up two spots this week, from last place to 12th.
Georgia’s next game is against Florida in two weeks. The Gators jumped one spot to fifth this week, switching places with Auburn.
