New UGA coach Kirby Smart is known as a tireless recruiter.
Nevertheless, there were some eyebrows raised when the state’s of Georgia’s No. 1 overall prospect said he had yet to hear from the new leader of the Bulldogs this week. That would be defensive tackle Derrick Brown of Lanier High School.
“I haven’t heard from him (Smart),” Brown told DawgNation’s Jeff Sentell on Tuesday.
“So I mean Signing Day is coming close and all. I don’t know what is going on.”
In fairness to Smart, he has only been on the job (officially, wink wink) since Monday.
Then again, Smart has made more than a few recruiting calls this week and he also had enough time to fly across the country to see this guy. So naturally you would think the No. 1 recruit in the home state would be a priority.
We guess Smart got the message because a few hours after the DawgNation story was posted, Brown tweeted that he finally got to talk to the new coach of the Bulldogs.
Last spring, UGA was listed by Brown as his leader but he backed off that stance publicly. Despite the coaching change, the Bulldogs are still considered the school to beat, with Auburn, Tennessee and Alabama are among the top contenders.
Good talk with Coach Smart??
