INDIANAPOLIS — Kentucky basketball learned its opponent and tip-off time for the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament: Wichita State at approximately 2:30 p.m. Sunday on CBS.
The second-seeded Wildcats (30-5) advanced with a win over 15th-seeded Northern Kentucky late Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Kentucky rolls into the Round of 32 riding a 12-game winning streak.
The latest victory sets up a juicy storyline for Sunday: a rematch of the 2014 NCAA Tournament second round when the eighth-seeded Wildcats, who’d lost 10 games, toppled top-seeded and undefeated Wichita State in an instant classic.
That game featured 14 lead changes, both teams shot better than 50 percent and it wasn’t decided until Shockers star Fred VanVleet missed a winning 3-point attempt at the buzzer. Kentucky went on to reach the NCAA championship game by winning the next three games — against Louisville, Michigan and Wisconsin — on clinching 3-pointers by Aaron Harrison in the final seconds.
