Kentucky had an opportunity to stay in the SEC East race and keep hopes for a New Year’s bowl alive with a win, but Ole Miss crashed the party and upset the Wildcats 37-34 on Saturday at Kroger Field.
Kentucky (6-3, 3-3 SEC) couldn’t hold a 10-point lead in the third quarter, and although running back Benny Snell and the offense gave the Cats a chance, Kentucky’s defense couldn’t keep Ole Miss out of the end zone. The Rebels notched the winning score on a fade to the back corner of the end zone with 5 seconds left.
Despite the loss, Kentucky held onto the No. 8 spot in the latest edition of the SEC Country Power Poll. Coach Mark Stoops’ squad also was ranked No. 8 last week. Ole Miss (4-5, 2-4 SEC) moved from No. 11 last week to No. 9 this week.
“Obviously, a very devastating loss,” Stoops said after the game. “You know, the bottom line is we didn’t make enough plays in critical moments. They did. I was proud of our offense taking it down and putting it in the end zone there. We came up fractions off, and it’s a difficult loss.”
Snell led Kentucky’s offense with 176 yards on the ground, but Kentucky’s defense surrendered 473 yards to Ole Miss — 382 of those yards coming through the air on a day when the Cats secondary struggled again.
The Wildcats were on pace for a 9-win season, but now 8 wins is the likely goal with Vanderbilt, Georgia and Louisville left on the schedule.
Kentucky and Vanderbilt kick off at 4 p.m. ET Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. The Commodores (4-5, 0-5 SEC) are ranked No. 13 in the SEC Country Power Poll and are searching for their first conference win. Vanderbilt beat Western Kentucky 31-17 on Saturday.
