For anyone who has ever wished they could get into a 5-star recruit’s head, Trae Young is here to help.
The nation’s No. 3 point guard prospect is blogging about his recruitment for USA Today, and he gave an update on Thursday after official visits to Kentucky and Kansas.
Young, who visited Kentucky for Big Blue Madness the weekend of Oct. 14, actually got to Lexington a day before the rest of the recruits who visited that weekend. He said being able to do that and get some alone time with John Calipari and the coaching staff was important.
“I loved having that day just to hang out with Coach Cal and the staff and really see what they had to offer before the rest of the recruits got there on Friday,” Young said. “That meant a lot to me. That showed me how much they really wanted me; just to want to spend that extra alone time with me and my family.”
The senior guard said Kentucky fans “are crazy” and that he “loved everything” about being in Lexington.
One of the things he loved most was Calipari. He said the coach’s honesty made an impact on him.
“The thing I love about Coach Cal is that he keeps it 100 with you,” Young said. “Kentucky isn’t for everybody, but he’s seen the way I play with a chip on my shoulder and he told me that Kentucky is for me.”
He gave the visit a 10 out of 10, but the Wildcats have some competition.
Young visited Kansas the following weekend, and was impressed by that visit as well. He said the Jayhawk coaches made it very clear how much they want him to play for them.
The 2017 prospect has also taken visits to Texas Tech and Oklahoma. His last official visit will be to Oklahoma State.
