Iowa basketball forward Ahmad Wagner is transferring to Kentucky, but not to play for John Calipari’s Wildcats. The 6-foot-7 junior is switching sports and will suit up for Mark Stoops’ squad this fall on the gridiron.
The Yellow Springs, Ohio, native was recruited by Kentucky in high school to play football, but he opted to instead play basketball at Iowa. After he finished his junior season for the Hawkeyes, Wagner was granted a release to pursue college football opportunities.
Kentucky was the choice.
“First off I would like to thank God for the blessing and opportunity he has put in front of me,” Wagner tweeted Tuesday afternoon. “With that being said after much thought and consideration from my family I will be furthering my academic and athletic career at the University of Kentucky!”
Wagner was a 4-star wide receiver prospect coming out of high school, according to the 247Sports composite. He was the 33rd-ranked receiver in the country.
He played in 96 career basketball games for Iowa with 25 starts. He averaged 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds per game as a junior.
