LEXINGTON, Ky. — Julius Randle has an interesting vantage point to the De’Aaron Fox and Lonzo Ball rivalry as a former Kentucky Wildcat and current Los Angeles Laker.
Randle, back in Lexington on Saturday to host a basketball camp, weighed in on the battle between the two rookie point guards.
“Obviously De’Aaron’s a great player,” Randle said. “I loved him through the whole season and the whole draft process, but my point guard is Lonzo. I’m excited to play with him, excited to build chemistry throughout the season. Obviously De’Aaron is gonna have a great career. He’s gonna be an excellent player.”
Fox and Ball squared off twice in the regular season. Ball got the better of Fox when UCLA picked up a regular season win in Rupp Arena, but Fox got his revenge as he poured in 39 points in Kentucky’s Sweet 16 win over UCLA. Fox’s 39 points were the most by a freshman in NCAA Tournament history.
More matchups are ahead between the two flashy point guards. Ball was taken second in the NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers while Fox went fifth to the Sacramento Kings.
More fuel was added to the rivalry when Ball missed a summer league game against Fox due to a sore groin. Fox then went to Twitter with what appeared to be a response to Ball’s absence. Despite the missed game, Ball went on to win summer league MVP.
“He makes everybody better,” Randle said of Ball. “He’s a great player. He obviously can score, but he makes the game a lot easier for everybody. He makes the game very simple and I think the way he plays is contagious.”
When the NBA schedule comes out, circle the first game between the Lakers and Kings.
“I guess that rivalry is gonna live forever,” Randle said.
