Most college teams would have trouble replacing guards the caliber of SEC Player of the Year Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray, who were both named to AP All-America teams Tuesday.
The Kentucky Wildcats and coach John Calipari, however, are not most teams.
Another star-studded recruiting class is on its way to Lexington, headlined by top guards De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk. Fox and Monk are the No. 1 point guard and No.1 shooting guard in the nation, respectively, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
The future backcourt partners are in Chicago to compete in the McDonald’s All-American game on Wednesday, along with two fellow Kentucky signees in forwards Bam Adebayo and Sacha Killeya-Jones.
“I think we’re losing the best backcourt in America, but we’re also bringing in the best backcourt in America,” Killeya-Jones told The Courier-Journal’s Kyle Tucker. “Kentucky fans don’t have anything to worry about with these two. They’ll step in and fill the gap right away.”
After being challenged by Arizona commit and fellow McDonald’s All-American guard Kobi Simmons on the notion that the best backcourt would belong to his Wildcats on the West Coast, Fox didn’t back down.
“That’s not even an argument,” Fox said. “But if we match up, we’ll see.”
Monk and Fox have big shoes to fill, but some think the pairing could even exceed the feats of Ulis and Murray.
