LEXINGTON, Ky. — When former Kentucky forward Derek Willis got his call from the Detroit Pistons, it was actually his fiancee on the receiving end.
Willis was in between agents and didn’t properly fill out his contact information.
“I just put her name down, but I put it in the wrong spot,” he explained. “It was like for emergency contact, I was like, ‘Call my fiancee.’ I guess they took it as my agent. So, they ended up calling her. ‘Hey, this is the news.’
It was good news nonetheless for Willis. The Pistons signed him to a one-year deal. He’ll report to Detroit’s training camp and then be sent to the G League Grand Rapids Drive.
“I’m just grateful,” Willis said. “My agent made a great call on it to play with them in summer league and do the things I was supposed to do. It just worked out.”
The 6-foot-9 forward started 15 games for the Wildcats as a senior. He averaged 7 points and a career-high 5.4 rebounds per game. His 49 made 3-pointers were second on the team.
