LEXINGTON, Ky. — Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Sounds like John Calipari has found a really good freshman point guard.
On Tuesday, a day after former Kentucky star De’Aaron Fox said McDonald’s All-American Quade Green shined in a pickup game between past and present Wildcats on Saturday, fellow NBA lottery pick Bam Adebayo also praised the team’s new floor general.
“Quade stood out,” Adebayo said. “I feel like he’s going to be pretty good.”
Green averaged 14.9 points, 9.8 assists and 3.2 steals last spring and summer on the Nike AAU circuit, leading his team to the championship game at Peach Jam — and he’s not the only UK newcomer already turning heads.
Calipari took to Twitter on Tuesday night with an encouraging report of his own on the 2017-18 Cats, most of whom have been on campus working out together all summer. Players are about to head home for a few weeks before the fall semester, but their coach got one last look before their break.
“After watching them,” Calipari wrote, “we’re going to be just fine. Can’t wait to get started!”
He followed up by tweeting that Fox, Adebayo and fellow former Cats Tyler Ulis, Malik Monk, Dominique Hawkins and Derek Willis — all of whom were back in town working at a youth camp — “showed our guys the ropes.” Calipari added: “Nothing like the old teaching the new.”
Monk faced the new guys in that pickup game Saturday and came away impressed, if not remotely surprised, by Kentucky’s latest No. 1-ranked recruiting class.
“I’ve seen them all before, so none of them surprised me. I’ve worked out with most of them,” Monk said. “But what’s his name? Shai? [That’s 6-foot-6 freshman combo guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.] He surprised me, because I’d never seen him before.”

He said freshmen Green, P.J. Washington, Jarred Vanderbilt and Hamidou Diallo looked good. “Everybody,” Monk said. “The whole class,” added Adebayo.
What did big Bam think of the Wildcats’ new post players?
“They did well,” he said. “They’ve got a long ways to go, just like I did when I was here. This year is going to be good for them.”
