Wenyen Gabriel’s college choice was a foregone conclusion on Wednesday afternoon, but the 5-star forward allowed Kentucky fans to breathe a little easier after he put pen to paper.
Born in the Sudan and raised in New Hampshire, the 6-foot-9, 195-pound senior made his decision official in front of friends and family at Wilbraham & Monson Academy (Mass.).
He committed to John Calipari on Oct. 1, soon after visiting campus in Lexington.
According to 247Sports.com, he is the No. 16 player in the class of 2016, and the No. 4 power forward. Gabriel was also strongly considering Duke and Maryland earlier this autumn.
Kentucky has a trio of signed or committed post options: Gabriel, 5-star power forward Sacha Killeya-Jones and 4-star power forward Tai Wynyard, who is slated to enroll in December and will be counted as part of the Class of 2015.
Killeya-Jones and Wynward are both expected to sign by the early period deadline on Nov. 18, while 5-star guard De’Aaron Fox is expected to make a commitment to Kentucky on Thursday evening. 247Sports.com predicts Fox will “100 percent” go with Calipari and the Wildcats.
