Saturday will bring a lot of waiting around for Kentucky basketball fans. The Wildcats face Florida at 8:15 p.m. ET at Rupp Arena, but before that, 5-star target Zion Williamson will announce his college decision.
Williamson’s announcement ceremony starts at 8 p.m. ET Saturday in his hometown of Spartanburg, S.C. Most Kentucky fans who plan on going to the Florida game will already be in their seats, and the arena would undoubtedly erupt if Williamson picks the Cats.
The 6-foot-6 and 275-pound forward is the No. 3 prospect in the 2018 class, according to 247Sports composite.
Kentucky, Duke and North Carolina are finalists for Williamson, as well as in-state schools South Carolina and Clemson.
Williamson isn’t the top prospect in the class, but he’s the most well-known. He’s long been an internet sensation for the vicious dunks and blocks that are manufactured from a guy with the body of an NFL defensive end.
Williamson has been quiet about his decision, but coaches, fans and fellow prospects have been pulling him in every direction. Kentucky 5-star point guard signee Immanuel Quickley made his pitch on a video published by USA Today.
“Zion, bro, come to Kentucky,” Quickley said. “I know you wanna go to the NBA, so come to UK. We’re gonna be throwing lobs off the backboard, you feel me, getting dunks, alley-oops, all that. But nah for real, you’re my bro, come to Kentucky so we can get this championship.”
It’s been well-chronicled that Williamson said in the summer that he wants to play with Quickley in college. Maybe that was a hint that most are looking past, but Kentucky shouldn’t be seen as anything other than an underdog at this point.
Eighty-seven percent of the 23 Crystal Ball picks have Williamson choosing Clemson.
Kentucky hopes to end Saturday with at least one win.
