Things have slowed down on the basketball recruiting trail as the early signing period has passed. Prospects in the 2018 class have started their senior seasons, so highlights are on the way. There’s no better place to start than with Zion Williamson.
Here’s the latest Kentucky basketball recruiting notebook.
He’s still dunking, and still very good. Williamson started his senior season with 46 points in a loss last week. The Spartanburg Day School sensation led his team to a 70-55 win on Tuesday night. He had 29 points and 11 rebounds.
There were more than a few slams in the highlight video.
The No. 2 prospect in the 2018 class opted not to sign in the fall period. Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, Clemson and South Carolina are all in the mix to land him.
Williamson left Tuesday’s game with a right knee injury and wasn’t available for interviews afterward. But The State caught up with Spartanburg Day coach Lee Sartor about Williamson’s recruitment.
“I think the family understands what’s at stake,” Sartor said of Williamson’s looming decision. “And I think what they’re trying to do is make sure that it’s the right fit for Zion. I give them all the credit because they’re not going into the situation blindly. They’re researching it, they’re doing their homework.
Williamson is a Youtube sensation and the gym is packed everywhere he plays, but Sartor said the 5-star phenom is not letting the attention distract him.
“Zion has taken all this stuff in stride,” Sartor told The State. “He’s remained respectful, he keeps his priorities straight. I think he’s handled this whole process beautifully. And I think a lot of that’s the person he is, his heart and the way his family has raised him as well.”
Kentucky and Clemson are co-favorites to land Williamson’s signature, according to the 247Sports crystal ball. The expert predictions go as follows: Kentucky 41 percent, Clemson 41 percent, North Carolina 6 percent, Kansas 6 percent.
