Kentucky fans can breathe a sigh of relief: 5-star freshman and preseason All-American Skal Labissiere is eligible for the 2015-2016 season.
Yahoo.com’s Shams Charania reported the news via Twitter on Friday evening.
Labissiere is a Haitian-born seven-footer who spent the past five years in the Memphis area after his home was wiped away by a massive earthquake in 2010.
He’s expected to be the latest in a long line of “one-and-done” stars at Kentucky. Coach John Calipari has long expected him to play this season despite the NCAA’s investigation into Labissiere’s eligibility.
“Last year, we had five players who had a review,” Calipari said at Kentucky’s media day last week. “A couple of them got cleared a week before the game.”
“This year, there was more than one. Every year we’ve been here, players go through the review. You won’t believe this: It’s always the best players who go through the review.”
Kentucky’s roster appears set for its exhibition opener against Ottawa on Nov. 2. The Wildcats were recently named the No. 1 team in the country (tied with North Carolina) by the Coaches Poll.
